A clear liquids bag that meets the rule

This is the single most common reason people are pulled aside. A bag that is the wrong size, or not clear, or will not close, costs you ten minutes and sometimes costs you the contents.

What to check
  • Check it is a quart-size, clear, resealable bag, which is the standard most places work to - confirm your own airport's wording, since a few differ
  • Look for one that stands up and zips rather than a fold-over

Travel bottles you fill yourself

Buying travel sizes of everything you own is expensive and you end up with things you do not like. Refillable bottles mean your own shampoo goes with you in a size that passes.

What to check
  • Check the capacity is at or under the limit your airport states, and that the caps genuinely seal, because a leak in the liquids bag ruins everything in it
  • Silicone squeezes the last of the contents out; rigid plastic does not

Packing cubes

A case packed loose has to be unpacked to find anything, and repacked to close. Cubes turn the case into drawers, which matters most on a trip with more than one stop.

What to check
  • Compression cubes with a second zip get more in, at the cost of weight - which is the trade, since the bag limit is weight, not volume
  • Check the set covers a couple of sizes rather than four identical ones

A luggage scale

Repacking on the terminal floor in front of a queue is the worst five minutes of any trip, and it is entirely avoidable at home the night before. It pays for itself the first time it saves an excess charge.

What to check
  • Check the maximum weight covers a full checked bag, not just carry-on
  • Look for a hook or strap that suits your handle type, and a display that holds the reading after you set the bag down

A bag that fits under the seat

The bag you keep with you is the one that decides whether the flight is comfortable. If it does not fit under the seat, it goes overhead, and everything in it is out of reach for the whole flight.

What to check
  • Check the stated dimensions against the underseat allowance for the airline you are flying, since these vary more than the cabin-bag rule does
  • Look for a trolley sleeve so it sits on the case handle

A power bank you are allowed to carry

A long day of maps, boarding passes and messaging ends with a dead phone at the exact time your boarding pass is on it. Power banks must travel in the cabin, never in a checked bag, which is a firm airline rule.

What to check
  • Check the capacity in watt-hours, since airlines set their limits that way - most allow up to 100Wh without asking
  • Confirm it goes in your cabin bag, and check it charges by USB-C so one cable covers everything

One charger for the whole trip

A phone, a laptop, earbuds and a watch is four wall bricks, and a hotel room has two sockets. One multi-port charger replaces all of them and takes a quarter of the space.

What to check
  • Check the total wattage and that at least one port is high-wattage USB-C for a laptop
  • If you are leaving the country, check whether you need an adapter or whether the plug itself swaps

A neck pillow that actually holds your head

On a 6am flight you are trying to sleep sitting up, and a soft pillow lets your head fall forward, which is the position that leaves you with a stiff neck instead of rest.

What to check
  • Memory foam holds its shape where an inflatable one bottoms out
  • Check whether it compresses into a small case, since an uncompressed one takes half a personal-item bag

An eye mask and ear plugs

A cabin does not go dark and does not go quiet. On an early flight the light comes up mid-way through the part you were hoping to sleep through, and this is the cheapest thing that fixes it.

What to check
  • A contoured mask that does not press on the eyes is the one people keep
  • Check the ear plugs come with a case, since they end up loose in a bag otherwise

Compression socks

Sitting still for hours with your legs down is what makes ankles swell and legs ache, and it is a genuine health consideration on longer flights. These are the item most recommended by people who fly a lot and least bought by people who do not.

What to check
  • Check the compression rating in mmHg - a mild graduated level is the usual travel choice
  • Get the size from the calf measurement, not the shoe size, because a sock that is too tight does the opposite of the job

An empty bottle to fill after security

You cannot take water through, and you can fill up on the other side for nothing. A collapsible bottle goes through empty and flat, then holds a full one for the flight.

What to check
  • Collapsible saves the space when empty, which is the whole point
  • Check the cap seals with the bottle full and folded, and that it is a wide enough neck to fill at an airport fountain

Somewhere for the documents

At the desk you need a passport, a boarding pass and sometimes a form, and you need them one-handed while holding a bag. Hunting through a pocket in a queue is how documents get left on counters.

What to check
  • If you are travelling as a family, look for one that holds several passports rather than one
  • Check it has a strap or fits a jacket pocket, and that it holds a boarding pass without folding it

Luggage tags and a way to spot your bag

Black roller cases are indistinguishable at a carousel, and every year people take home somebody else's. A tag with your details and something bright on the handle solves both problems.

What to check
  • Look for a tag with a covered card, so your address is not readable by everyone in the queue
  • A bright strap or handle wrap makes the bag findable from across a carousel

A pill or medication case for the cabin bag

Medication goes in the bag that stays with you, always, because a checked bag can go somewhere you are not. A small case keeps a week of doses organised and in one place.

What to check
  • Look for a case with separate labelled compartments and a hard shell, since a soft pouch gets crushed in a bag
  • Check it is big enough for the largest thing you take

3 options — pick the one that fits, then tap through for the current price on Amazon.

A bag for what you have already worn

Halfway through a trip the case is half clean clothes and half not, and they are mixed together. One drawstring bag keeps that boundary and makes unpacking at home a single decision.

What to check
  • Look for a breathable fabric rather than plastic, which keeps damp clothes damp
  • Check it is big enough for a full trip's laundry rather than two days of it
